55 Unforgettable Met Gala Red Carpet Looks

The first Monday in May looked different this year, as the annual Met Gala has been postponed to September due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year, the Met Gala will focus on the theme of “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which will take a deep dive into the history of American fashion. The event will be held in a smaller setting on Sept. 13 — pending government guidelines for social gatherings this fall — and will be co-chaired by Timothée Chalamet, Amanda Gorman, Billie Eilish and Naomi Osaka. The event will coincide with New York Fashion Week, which will run from Sept. 8 to Sept. 12.
It’s been two years since celebrities have graced the steps of the Met with their high-fashion looks, with stars like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Blake Lively, Jennifer Lopez and others regularly leaving their mark on the Met Gala red carpet.
Rihanna has arguably been the most-watched style star at the Met Gala year after year. Some of her most iconic looks include her custom yellow Guo Pei dress at the 2015 Met Gala celebrating the exhibit “China: Through the Looking Glass” and her avant-garde Comme des Garçons look at the 2017 Met Gala celebrating the exhibit “Rei

Black Fashion Fair and Brooklyn Sewing Academy Team to Equip Next Generation of Creatives

The Black Fashion Fair is teaming up with the Brooklyn Sewing Academy this summer with a goal to educate Black and brown students who may not otherwise have access to knowledge and training in sewing, pattern making, and fashion illustration.
Class sizes will be small and intimate and each student will receive a new sewing machine they can take home and practice on to begin their journey. All lessons and materials are offered at no cost to students.
“If anything, my time at FIT showed me not only is there a lack of representation, there is a lack of outreach to Black and brown communities,” said Antoine Gregory, founder of the Black Fashion Fair, a platform that puts Black fashion talent front and center with an online designer database and a curated virtual marketplace. “I think as we continue to advocate for change and inclusion, these partnerships will create real opportunity.”
Amy Verrier, director of education and Timothy Westbrook studio creative director of the Brooklyn Sewing Academy, were keen to collaborate on educating the next generation.

Andra Day Goes Metallic Gold at the 2021 Oscars

At the 2021 Oscars, Andra Day rounded out award season with another standout look.
The actress and singer, who is nominated for best actress for her titular role in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” wore a custom Vera Wang dress reminiscent of the Oscar statue on the red carpet. Day’s gold metallic dress featured Wang’s classic draping as well as a cutout design, a thigh-high slit and asymmetric straps.
Wang worked with a welder to help design the custom dress, which is made completely out of metallic mesh.

Day’s gold dress falls in line the Oscars red carpet fashion trend of gold high-fashion looks. Fellow best actress nominee Carey Mulligan wore a Valentino gold sequined bandeau top and matching voluminous skirt from the design house’s spring 2021 couture collection. Double nominee Leslie Odom Jr. also went gold for the 2021 Oscars, wearing a tonal double-breasted suit by Brioni.
Day has consistently worn standout high-fashion looks this award season. She started at the Golden Globes by giving a nod to Holiday’s old Hollywood glamour style in a Chanel couture dress. She went with a more modern look at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards, wearing a

Zendaya Goes Neon Yellow at the 2021 Oscars

Zendaya has long been a red carpet star, and the actress brought her style power once again at the 2021 Oscars.
The actress wore a neon yellow silk chiffon gown with a cutout detail custom-made by Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli at the award ceremony.
Zendaya’s custom dress, which is named the “force de beauté,” took more than 300 hours to create by hand at the design house’s atelier. Zendaya has previously worked with Valentino and was named a brand ambassador in December.

Zendaya took her high-fashion Oscar look to the next level by pairing the custom dress with 183 carats of Bulgari diamonds. The actress unveiled a yellow diamond necklace from the fine jeweler’s 2021 high-jewelry collection, called Magnifica, which will be released this summer.
The necklace is created with two diamond collars and a removable 6-carat yellow diamond brooch with a tassel. The collars and tassels include 18 regular-cut diamonds, 693 fancy shape step cut diamonds and 398 round brilliant-cut diamonds and pave-set diamonds. She paired the necklace with a matching 21-carat yellow diamond ring and 9-carat yellow diamond earrings.
Zendaya’s long-time stylist, Law Roach, gave a closer look at the neon dress on his Instagram,

Alber Elbaz Dies at 59

Alber Elbaz, the designer best known for his spectacular rejuvenation of Lanvin from 2001 to 2015, died on Saturday at a Paris hospital. He was 59.
His death, due to COVID-19, was confirmed by Compagnie Financière Richemont, his joint venture partner in AZ Factory, his latest fashion venture.
An ebullient character prized for his couture-like craft, Elbaz took a five-year hiatus after being ousted from Lanvin and just launched AZ Factory, hinged on solutions-driven fashions, entertainment and tech.
While his name was not on the label, the start-up was steeped in Elbaz’s personality, humor, and his inimitable flair for soigné fashions.
“I have lost not only a colleague but a beloved friend,” Richemont founder and chairman Johann Rupert said in a statement, expressing his shock and sadness at Elbaz’s sudden passing.
“Alber had a richly deserved reputation as one of the industry’s brightest and most beloved figures. I was always taken by his intelligence, sensitivity, generosity and unbridled creativity,” Rupert said. “He was a man of exceptional warmth and talent, and his singular vision, sense of beauty and empathy leave an indelible impression.
“It was a great privilege watching Alber in his last endeavor as he worked to realize his dream of ‘smart fashion that cares.’
