History of Mar-a-Lago: How It Transformed From Post Cereals Heiress’ Estate to Donald Trump’s Members-only Club

Today, Mar-a-Lago is strongly associated with former President Donald Trump, but the club boasts an intriguing history as both an estate and a national historic landmark.

The Palm Beach, Fla., property wasn’t always a members-only club or used for official matters. It was first a large mansion built by Marjorie Merriweather Post, heiress to what was previously known as Post Cereals (now named General Foods Corp.) to live in as a home.

After Post’s death in 1973, she willed the property to the National Park Service in the hopes it be used for state visits or as an official residence for presidents of the U.S. However, the cost of upkeep was more than what Post had initially provided, causing it to eventually be returned to the Post Foundation in 1981.

In 1985, Donald Trump purchased the 17-acre Florida property for around $8 million, though some sources put the combined total cost to reportedly be around $10 million.

When he was president from 2017 to 2021, Trump used the estate as his “Winter White House,” and it was used as a vacation home during the winter months.

Nominee Quinta Brunson Wears Custom Beaded Roberto Cavalli Gown to the Golden Globes

After making an eye-catching arrival in a cobalt Carolina Herrera dress on Friday at the inaugural WWD Style Awards, Quinta Brunson was back on the carpet, this time for the Golden Globe awards. The actress, who’s nominated for her leading role in “Abbott Elementary,” sparkled before the ceremony in a custom brown Roberto Cavalli gown designed by creative director Fausto Puglisi.

Puglisi wanted to take a sleek and body-conscious approach for Brunson’s look, which he described as modern and classic.

“I kept thinking of velvet,” Puglisi said in a statement about the custom gown. “Velvet is one of my favorite Hollywood fashion sensations. A beautiful chocolate velvet, covered in shining beads. Quinta is a star, and she deserved to shine on her special night.”

Brown velvet also made an appearance, in the form of obi belts, in Puglisi’s 2025 pre-fall collection.

Brunson is nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy, marking her third Golden Globe nomination. She won the award in 2023. “Abbott Elementary,” created by Brunson, is in the middle of airing its fourth season on ABC.

Bottega Veneta Through the Years

It’s hard to imagine Bottega Veneta, which last year surpassed the 1.6 billion euro mark and has reached global brand status, as a struggling, off-the-radar, near bankrupt leather goods label back in 2001 — and many may have forgotten that the acquisition of the brand was spearheaded by Tom Ford and Domenico De Sole, who were leading the then-Gucci Group.

Gucci Group Takes the Reigns

De Sole at the time revealed that Bottega Veneta had been at the top of the list of his acquisition targets, and with Ford, realized the brand’s strong heritage based on high-quality leather accessories and shoes and Italian craftsmanship had huge potential. He believed the brand could exponentially grow its revenues, which in 2000 amounted to approximately $50 million.

Ford did not get involved in the design of the collection, as he was taking over the over the design of the Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche rtw line, which Gucci Group acquired in November 1999. Instead, Tomas Maier was appointed to the role of creative director of Bottega Veneta.
