Andra Day Goes Metallic Gold at the 2021 Oscars

At the 2021 Oscars, Andra Day rounded out award season with another standout look.
The actress and singer, who is nominated for best actress for her titular role in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” wore a custom Vera Wang dress reminiscent of the Oscar statue on the red carpet. Day’s gold metallic dress featured Wang’s classic draping as well as a cutout design, a thigh-high slit and asymmetric straps.
Wang worked with a welder to help design the custom dress, which is made completely out of metallic mesh.

Day’s gold dress falls in line the Oscars red carpet fashion trend of gold high-fashion looks. Fellow best actress nominee Carey Mulligan wore a Valentino gold sequined bandeau top and matching voluminous skirt from the design house’s spring 2021 couture collection. Double nominee Leslie Odom Jr. also went gold for the 2021 Oscars, wearing a tonal double-breasted suit by Brioni.
Day has consistently worn standout high-fashion looks this award season. She started at the Golden Globes by giving a nod to Holiday’s old Hollywood glamour style in a Chanel couture dress. She went with a more modern look at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Awards, wearing a

Top Trends From the American Collections Week

The first season under its new name, the American Collections Calendar marked New York’s second digital fashion season — and with an extended timeline. Designers like Tom Ford, Joseph Altuzarra, Michael Kors, Tory Burch and more are slated to show through April. Within the fall season, designers bridged the fine line between the mood of the current times — embracing cozy, work from home attire — and that of the brighter future ahead, with optimistic, exuberant designs.
Here, WWD breaks down the top seven trends from the American Collections week.
1. Knits
The biggest trend of NYFW? Knitwear. From sweater dresses and innovative statement knits to sweater vests and head-to-toe knit dressing, the fall season has it all. As seen here in Jonathan Simkhai’s cut-out number, 10 Crosby Derek Lam’s sweater vest and Ulla Johnson’s standout, asymmetrical cable knit dress.

2. Edgy Winter Florals
Floral blooms with a darker edge were plentiful this season. Flowers popped up in moody tones, as seen at Prabal Gurung and Tanya Taylor, and with grunge attitude, seen here from R13.

7 Emerging Rtw Brands That Stood Out During American Collections Week

Duncan
Year founded: 2019
Design aesthetic: After-dark glamour: a focus on tailoring and modest dress with an edge.
Inspiration: A love letter to New York, inspired by founder Michelle Duncan’s time spent as a tourist in her own city. Over the holidays, Duncan took advantage of the pandemic-driven, tourist-less city to explore popular sites that she had never visited before. “Even though it’s quiet, this is the greatest city in the world,” she told WWD. Duncan interpreted this love into architectural lines, fine tailoring and a moody élan.
Key pieces: Tailored separates inspired by classic men’s wear, but fitted to accentuate the female form: an Italian gray overcoat, two new trousers (one wide-leg, high-waisted, the other cropped and with fishtail backs, a cropped blazer with signature bleeding heart embroidered decoration). The introduction of moody, deep black, velvet dresses for nights out — a dramatic, cupcake version or slinky body-hugging number with a sweetheart neckline and nipped waist. Updated pleated skirts and modest dresses zhuzhed up with metal grommets, elongated pleated collars and beaded embroideries.

Get to Know: Kepler

During a global crisis and through a roller-coaster of emotions, Kepler designers Jaimee McKenna and Alexandra Hadjikyriacou have enjoyed a slow and mindful pace that has allowed designing to feel the most liberating. The timeless and otherworldly brand, as the girls described it, is focused on the construction of the pieces. With backgrounds in textiles, most pieces are made by hand or have a handcrafted element and “we think that speaks volumes,” said the designers.
Planet Kepler is inspired by landscapes, natural materials, the contours of the Earth and geology, as well as the arts and culture and all things creative. Their most recent collection, for example, was inspired by The Empress, who represents all the zodiac signs, said McKenna and Hadjikyriacou. A fine black pullover top from the collection, for instance, illustrates the hand embroidery of symbols.

The duo works as a balanced yin and yang and would like to inspire people to buy into made-to-order, bespoke and hand-created pieces. Moving forward, the duo will continue to make the brand as ethical and sustainable as possible by “exploring not just our own craft, but introducing other traditional crafts and
